read aloud

Putti, singular putto, nude chubby child figures, often with wings, frequently appearing in both mythological and religious paintings and sculpture, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

This is not to be confused with the Cherubim, singular Cherub, which are one of the Choirs of Angels. The putti are neither angels or Cupids. However, they were frequently combined with angels or used in the context of angels in art.

The names Cherub and Putto are pretty-much interchangeable. The word Cherub has possibly become overused as a term of endearment so often those working in the Arts will refer to a figure as 'Putti' which suggests you are in possession of a higher level of historical/artistic knowledge!
